Cinema's Choice: ABC La Chaux-de-Fonds

The 108-seat ABC Cinema is an intimate and comfortable theatre in a cultural centre, offering art and essay programming. Sessions without popcorn and without intermission, films in their original version with French subtitles, in first viewing and in the presence of guests, new films and classics make the ABC an atypical cinema. Here comes the choice of its programmer Marie Herny.

«Muzamil was just born, when his mother Sakina comes to present him to the village imam for his blessing. At the moment of the blessing, the sheikh is interrupted by a shaman who collapses and pronounces only one word: "twenty". The fate of Muzamil is thus sealed. During twenty years, he will grow up and approach the fateful year. The first Sudanese fiction in forty years impresses by the talent of its young director, Amjad Abu Alala, who delivers a beautiful fable about fate.»
«Threatened with death in Afghanistan by the Taliban, Hassan Fazili had to go into clandestine exile with his family. Their journey will last three years. They documented it with the cameras of three phones and came up with raw footage of what is known as the "migration crisis".»

The head of a shoe factory persuades the army to hold manoeuvres nearby: So his workers can meet men at a ball. But the pot-bellied reservists are anything but attractive. Utilizing a brief hint of freedom, The Love of a Blonde throws an undisguised, humorous and tender look at Czechoslovakia in the 1960s and the ridiculousness of its functionaries.

«Near Prague, the small town of Zruc has 2000 female workers who work in the shoe factory. Concerned about this excess female population, the works council obtained from the army the establishment of a military cantonment nearby. One evening at a ball, Andula notices the pianist in the orchestra, and the interest is mutual... Second film by Milos Forman, "The Loves of a Blonde" represents the revival of Prague cinema before the repression after the Prague Spring.»

Paterson is a bus driver in the city whose name her shares: Paterson, New Jersey. Every day, he drives his route and observes the city as it drifts across his windshield. During his lunch break, he writes poetry into a notebook. In contrast to Paterson's steady routine, his wife Laura's world is constantly changing. New dreams come to her almost daily, each a different and inspired project.

«Paterson lives in a town with the same name in the state of New Jersey. The city, which has been home to several writers, from William Carlos Williams to Allen Ginsberg, also inspires the young man. A bus driver, Paterson is also a minimalist poet who records all his texts in a small notebook. Apart from this activity, Paterson's life, who drinks a beer every day in the same bar before going home, is perfectly regulated. Another little gem in Jim Jarmusch's singular work.»
«Jocelyne Saab is an exception in a predominantly male world and context. She was honored at the Geneva festival Palestine, Filmer c'est Exister (which also took up residence at the ABC for a weekend in November). With "Dunia", she signs a committed film, a reference to poetry, dance and music. She talks about the passage to adulthood, the affirmation of identity, the place of the individual and his values in a pre-modern society. »
«A faithful adaptation of Dostoyevsky's novel, Kurosawa's "The Idiot" takes place at the end of the war, on the island of Hokkaido. Kamedia returns from the war struck by a kind of "idiocy" that made him altruistic and naive. He will fall in love with Taeko who will be sold by his father to Akama, the son of a local notable who has just died. A masterpiece by one of the great masters of Japanese cinema, to whom we owe films with both visual and formal mastery.»
«Before the sublime "So Long, My Son", Xiaoshuai Wang offered us an exploration of the current state of China, taking the audience on a journey to discover the complexity of the country. Following in the footsteps of his ancestors on his mother's and father's side, Xiaoshuai Wang traces the history of an ordinary Chinese family over the past century and introduces us to people from all walks of life: from Beijing's white collar workers who work tirelessly in the monotony of urban life to rural ethnic minorities who have lived according to the same customs for generations.»
«Adapted from a news item that shooked Japan in the 1980s, "Nobody Knows" tells the story of four children left to their own following the departure of their mother. What is initially experienced as a recreation, soon turns into a struggle for survival. As they officially do not exist, no one suspects the drama. A beautiful and moving film, by the great Hirokazu Kore-Eda.»
«The young priest Don Giulio leaves his first parish on the small Italian island of Ponza. He spent ten happy years there: he shared the joys and sorrows of the villagers, of whom he was a friend and adviser. His new church is located in Rome in a middle-class neighborhood where his parents, siblings and old school friends also live. He hopes to be able to help people there too, but his optimism will soon be dashed. »
