Withdrawing to the area around Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise to escape the pressures of Parisian life, Vincent van Gogh (Willem Dafoe) is treated brutally by some, and more kindly by others. The owner of the local restaurant feels for him and gives him a notebook for his drawings. Others are afraid of his dark and unpredictable mood swings. Even the artist and his close friend Paul Gauguin (Oscar Isaac) finds him too stifling and leaves him. Only his loyal brother, art dealer Theo (Rupert Friend) continues to support Vincent, even if he doesn’t succeed in selling a single painting.

With moving insights into his life’s ups and downs, this film is a fascinating journey into the body and soul of Vincent van Gogh.
