Embittered and living alone, Dora (Fernanda Montenegro), who transcribes letters for illiterate people and pockets the money without sending the notes, meets nine-year-old Josué (Vinícius de Oliveira) just before his mother is killed in an accident. After much deliberation, Dora reluctantly embarks on a journey through northern Brazil with Josué in search of his family. With striking cinematography and a rich portrayal of Brazil’s diverse landscapes, Central Station avoids sentimentality to become a moving study of connection between two strangers improbably joined together.

A success at the Berlin Film Festival where it won the Golden Bear award, the unassuming road movie thrust director Walter Salles into the spotlight for its naturalistic portrayal of longing and redemption.
