Brazil, 1971: Former left-wing congressman Rubens Pavia lives the vibrant lifestyle of the 1970s in Rio de Janeiro with his family. The clutches of the military dictatorship are part of everyday life. One day, Rubens is abducted by henchmen and disappears. His family does not know where he is or whether he is still alive. Eunice, his wife, tries to track him down and find out what happened to her husband.

Director Walter Salles tells the true story of the Pavia family, where he spent time as a child, in a touching way and with marvellous images. His deeply humanistic film is a declaration of love for democratic Brazil that pays tribute to those who fought against injustice. The drama was awarded the Oscar for Best International Film and was also nominated in the categories «Best Film» and «Best Actress» (Fernanda Torres).
