Once upon a time, there was a poor woodcutter and a poor woodcutter's wife who lived in a large forest. Cold, hunger and war made their lives difficult. One day, the woodcutter took in a baby – a child who had been thrown from one of the many trains that constantly passed through their forest. This baby, a precious commodity that must be protected at all costs, changes the lives of the woman, her husband and all those whose fate it touches – right down to the man who threw it from the train.

To hint at the unspeakable, French director Michel Hazanavicius chooses the medium of animated film. With a poetic animation style, he tells a moving story that relentlessly searches for light and hope in the midst of horror. The film is an impressive adaptation of the fairy tale of the same name by Jean-Claude Grumberg.
