Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, an academic in his mid-forties, is on the run. He arrives in Recife during the exuberant Carnival week in order to see his son again, and finds refuge underground thanks to a network of solidarity. With meticulous attention to detail, idiosyncratic characters, and subtle humour, Kleber Mendonça Filho paints a stylised atmospheric portrait of the final years of the military regime, crafting a phenomenal political thriller from it. Wagner Moura, star of «Narcos», delivers a brilliant lead performance, for which he was awarded Best Actor at Cannes, while Mendonça Filho received the award for Best Director.
