By day, Saina struggles to make ends meet as a horse herder and to provide for his family, while at night he appears in breathtaking horse shows as a majestic knight. The world in which Saina grew up – the steppes of Inner Mongolia – is changing dramatically. While he continues to care for his grumpy father and the family’s horses in the countryside, everyone around him is seeking a better life in the city. Saina, too, juggles between tradition and modernity, between city and countryside, between his father and his ex-wife with whom he has a child – trying to find his own path without denying his roots.

The powerful debut of young Chinese director Xiaoxuan Jiang was awarded Best Screenplay and Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. An intimate portrait of masculinity and tradition in crisis – told from a female perspective.
