In their youth, Ingrid and Martha were close friends working for the same magazine. But life eventually drove them apart. Ingrid became a novelist, while Martha pursued a career as a war correspondent. After years without contact, the two women meet again in a situation that is as difficult as it is extraordinary: one of them is terminally ill.

Even in his first English-language feature, the style of Pedro Almodóvar remains unmistakable: vibrant imagery, emotional intensity, and a keen sensitivity to the inner lives of his characters. This melodrama about assisted dying and farewell is carried by the outstanding performances of Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. Despite the gravity of its subject matter, the film possesses a remarkable lightness, for which Almodóvar was awarded the Golden Lion in Venice.
