The ten-year-old Bashu becomes an orphan when his village on the Persian Gulf is bombed. Hiding on the back of a truck, he makes his way north to the Caspian Sea, where he jumps off. In this foreign region, the people respond to him with hostility, mocking him for his skin color and accent. Nai, a woman whose husband is absent, takes Bashu in and treats him as her own son.
