London, 1950s: longtime civil servant Mr Williams is nearing retirement. When he learns that he has only a few months left to live, he realises how unfulfilled his life has been. For the first time in his career, he stops going to work and decides to devote his remaining time to a clear mission: the construction of a children’s playground long denied by the city.

Based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 classic «Ikiru», Japanese-British Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro relocates the story from Japan to post-war London as screenwriter. Director Oliver Hermanus puts Bill Nighy centre stage and reminds us that it is never too late to do good for others.
