In Cluj, the capital of Transylvania, Orsolya works as a court bailiff. During an eviction in a house slated to make way for a luxury hotel, a tragedy unfolds before her eyes. Haunted by guilt, Orsolya cancels a long-planned family holiday and seeks out conversations with various people. Yet neither her husband, her closest friend, a chance encounter with a former student, nor a confession to an Orthodox priest can resolve her moral dilemma.

Radu Jude’s tragicomedy is both a homage to Roberto Rossellini’s «Europa ’51» and a sharp analysis of the contradictions and hypocrisies of contemporary Europe. Cluj emerges as a city shaped by booming tourism and construction on the one hand, and by the growing normalisation of poverty, homelessness, and nationalism on the other. The film screened in competition at the Berlinale, where it was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay.
