In the spring of 1981, nine-year-old Cáit is sent to live in the countryside with distant relatives. The taciturn girl is meant to spend the summer there, so as not to be a burden on her family. Whether, or when, she will return home remains uncertain. In the care of the Kinsellas, hard-working farmers, Cáit slowly begins to blossom and discovers an entirely new way of life. Yet the farm, set amid the Irish landscape, seems to harbour a secret – one that Cáit begins to explore with newly found courage and trust.

As the first Irish film to receive an Academy Award nomination, «The Quiet Girl» tells, in a gentle and deeply hopeful manner, the story of people striving to leave pain behind. Both visually striking and sensitively observed, the film becomes a moving plea for kindness and affection. It is based on the short story «Foster» by Claire Keegan.
