The eleven-year-old Mona fled Syria with her family and now attends a school in Berlin’s Wedding district. She doesn’t speak a word of German – but she can play football. The dedicated teacher Mr. Chepovsky, known as Mr. Che, recognizes her extraordinary talent and invites her to join the girls’ team. Mona is a fighter, but she soon realizes that they can only succeed if she and the other girls stick together.
The film had its world premiere in the Generation Kplus section of the Berlinale. The story draws on the personal experiences of filmmaker Soleen Yusef, who both wrote and directed the film. It’s a powerful statement against racism, celebrating solidarity and respectful coexistence in society.
