Raised in southern Austria, Maria Lassnig makes her way via the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts into the post-war art scene of the city. Quiet and stubborn, she moves among men who enjoy hearing themselves speak. She turns inward, sensing her own body while observing the world – and she paints. Relentlessly, and with a touch of mischief. Patiently, she builds her career and knows the value of her painting long before the art world comes to the same conclusion.

In her intricately structured biopic, Anja Salomonowitz traces the life of the Austrian avant-garde artist Maria Lassnig. Birgit Minichmayr portrays the painter across all stages of her life and emotional states. Reenactments and documentary sequences intertwine to form a hybrid portrait: a film about Lassnig’s struggle in a male-dominated art world and about her physical wrestling with painting, through which she brings her inner pain onto the canvas.
