Enrico Berlinguer, the charismatic Secretary-General of the Italian Communist Party, seeks a new political path in the early 1970s: away from Soviet-influenced socialism and towards a reconciliation with Western democratic ideals. In a world shaped by the Cold War, he challenges entrenched ideological divisions and – despite strong resistance – begins a dialogue with Aldo Moro, leader of the Christian Democrats. But when Moro is kidnapped and later murdered by the Red Brigades, the «historic compromise» comes to an abrupt end.

Portrayed masterfully by Elio Germano, Berlinguer continues to impress with his political foresight and personal integrity. Enhanced by striking archival footage, «Berlinguer. La grande ambizione» succeeds not only as a moving drama about one man’s struggle for a more just society, but also as a nuanced portrait of an era marked by hope and disillusionment.
