Iraq in the 1990s: Every year, schools draw lots to decide who must bake a birthday cake in honour of President Saddam Hussein. This time, the task falls to nine-year-old Lamia. She lives with her grandmother in the Mesopotamian marshes, and they have very little money. On her way to the nearest town, she receives help from her friend Saeed to gather the necessary baking ingredients. But the two must be both inventive and determined: due to economic sanctions, food is scarce, and poverty tends to bring out the less admirable sides of people.

Hasan Hadi’s feature debut, based on a childhood memory, won the Audience Award of the Directors' Fortnight as well as the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. A touching adventure story that repeatedly breaks its portrayal of an oppressive autocracy with moments of lightness.
