A village in the highlands of eastern Anatolia. As tradition demands, families celebrate the feast of circumcision. Little Mert also has to undergo the procedure, but father Ismail has no money to arrange the celebration. No one provides them with the lamb that has to be served to the guests for the celebration. Mert's sister frightens her brother: "If the father can't find a lamb, he will slaughter his own son... His mother Medine finally gets support from an unexpected side.

Mehmet and Berzan, two young men from different regions of Turkey bond together as lower - class citizens in Istanbul. When Mehmet is unjustly arrested, his frightened roomates evict him and he loses his job. Mehmet’s loyalty to Berzan will eventually force him to disregard an uncompassionate bureaucracy and embark on a journey eastward across Turkey.
