Yuli is the nickname given to Carlos Acosta by his father, Pedro, who considers him the son of Ogun, an African god and a fighter. As a child Yuli avoids discipline and education, learning from the streets of an impoverished and abandoned Havana. His father, however, has other ideas, and knowing that his son has a natural talent for dance, sends him to the National Ballet School of Cuba. Despite his repeated escapes and initial poor behaviour, the boy is inevitably drawn to the world of dance, and begins to shape his legendary career from a young age, becoming the first black dancer to be cast in some of the most prestigious ballet roles, originally written for white dancers, in companies such as the Houston Ballet or the Royal Ballet in London.

Falling in love with him, Julieta divides her time between her family, her job, and Antía's education until a fatal accident changes their lives. Slowly falling into a depression, Julieta is helped by Antía and Bea, but one day Antia suddenly goes missing after a vacation, with no clues about where to find her, leaving Julieta desperate to understand the reasons of her disappearance...

Cocó is eight years old and no longer wants to be called by her birth name, Aitor. But on summer vacation with her family in the Basque country, her wish is ignored by almost everyone, especially her traditional grandmother. Her mother Ane tries to be there for her child despite her own challenges, but Cocó only really is met with understanding by her unwavering great-aunt, who is a beekeeper. This gives Cocó the self-confidence she needs to stand up for her own identity and its acceptance. "20'000 especies de abejas" is a touching feature film debut in which women from three generations deal with questions of identity. Director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren manages to show the complexity of family and identity in a sensitive way. The film is carried by Sofía Otero, who was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Actress at this year's Berlinale for her portrayal of Cocó.
