After the war, new houses gradually begin to rise from the ruins of Tokyo. Otane, a widow who has lost her only child, gets by with sporadic earnings. One day, her neighbor Tashiro appears with a boy named Kohei, a war orphan he wishes to entrust to her care. Initially reluctant, Otane tries to get rid of the boy as quickly as possible. Yet her search for parents or relatives proves unsuccessful, and reluctantly, she takes Kohei in for the time being.

«Record of a Tenement Gentleman» is Yasujiro Ozu’s first postwar film, a sensitive drama exploring the aftermath of World War II and the human capacity for empathy. Ozu tells the story with his characteristic calm style, allowing space for the subtle emotional development of his characters. The classic is available in a restored version.
