Amid the turmoil of the Thirty Years’ War, a mysterious soldier arrives in a remote Protestant village. To the displeasure of the local community, the stranger produces a document identifying him as the heir to a long-abandoned estate. Determined to make a new life for himself, he does everything he can to find his place and gain acceptance. But his secret makes this difficult: he has travelled here under a false identity, posing as a man.

Inspired by a real court case from 1721, Austrian director Markus Schleinzer’s «Rose» tells a story of a woman’s quest for freedom and self-determination in a time and culture that denied women both. For her remarkable, unsentimental portrayal of Rose, Sandra Hüller won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the 2026 Berlinale.
